The Northern Sydney suburb of Castlecrag was designed by architect Walter Burley Griffin in the 1920’s. He was particularly sensitive to the beauty of the Australian natural landscape which significantly influenced his project for Castlecrag. The roads wind with the contours of the peninsula and houses were often made of sandstone quarried on site and thoughtfully placed in the landscape to offer all neighbours an uninterrupted view of Middle Harbour. Griffin designed a unique “knitlock” precast concrete building method with which some of these homes were constructed. Knitlock Waystation is proposed as an architectural historical lookout in memory of Griffin’s principles.
